Purpose
This e-learning resource has been established to support the Greek Educational Centre’s face-to-face Greek language courses.
Project team
-
Ilias Pavlidis (Language Teacher, Greek Educational Centre)
-
Paul Left (e-learning consultant).
Rationale
The project team wanted to:
-
Provide more flexible learning opportunities for participants currently enrolled in the center's courses. There is a wide range of levels and learning needs, along with work and family commitments.
-
Provide flexible learning opportunities to others. Although the site is not intended to be used for distance delivery, it is available to ex-students who have moved out of Auckland and would like to maintain access to the centre’s resources. It is also envisaged that those studying modern Greek in face-to-face courses elsewhere will benefit from the resource.
-
Provide a channel to share links to web-based resources such as online dictionaries, tutorials and linguistics tools.
-
Provide a channel to distribute electronic resources such as audio files, worksheets and handouts.
-
Enable improved ways to disseminate news: eg of social and cultural activities of the Greek community such as Greek language films which benefit Greek language learners.
-
Encourage increased interaction and collaborative learning between the different classes.
The system
The e-learning site uses Moodle, a free and open-source system which has become the learning management system (LMS) of choice for many large institutions as well as small providers. Moodle provides a range of functions to support flexible and independent learning opportunities, including tools for:
-
sharing learning resources such as audio files and worksheets
-
synchronous and asynchronous discussion
-
writing (such as journals, wikis and blogs)
-
news and announcements
-
quizzes and tutorials
